The ongoing story of a village in West Cumbria
Gilcrux Community Archive is the ongoing story of a village in West Cumbria
Photographs might show us a face, room, field… that would otherwise be lost. A single old photograph can answer questions that years of research cannot.
Your Gilcrux Community Archive hopes to build a collection of images that tells the story of this parish across time. We need your help to do that. Do you have photographs connected to Gilcrux? They might be:
Family portraits going back generations
Pictures of the village, its buildings or its landscape
Photographs of local events, celebrations or gatherings
Images of people who lived and worked here
Anything that captures life in this parish, whatever the era
No photograph is too ordinary.
How it works – If you have physical photographs you would like to contribute, you can send them to us via email, or we will arrange to have them carefully scanned and returned to you so the originals never leave your hands for long.
Either way, every image will be credited and stored with care. You decide how it is used.
Other ways to get involved – Photographs are just one part of what we are building. The Gilcrux Community Archive needs people as much as it needs documents and images, and there are plenty of ways to contribute that do not require you to have anything to give.
Become an Archival Steward
If you enjoy research, organising information or simply love local history, you might consider becoming an archival steward. Stewards help catalogue and care for the collection, follow up on leads, and make sure the archive grows in an accurate and meaningful way. No formal qualifications are needed. Curiosity and a connection to this community are more than enough.
Share your memories through oral history
Some of the most valuable records are the ones that were never written down. If you have memories of life in Gilcrux, whether from decades ago or more recently, we would love to record them. Oral history interviews are relaxed conversations, not formal occasions, and they capture details about everyday life that no document ever could. Your voice and your memories belong in this archive too.
Spread the word
Even if you feel you’ve nothing to contribute directly, you may know someone who does. Telling a neighbour, sharing a post, or mentioning the archive at a village gathering can open doors we didn’t know existed.
However you choose to get involved, you’re welcome here. Get in touch using the contact form on this website, text Debbie (AKA Bee) on 07359 011144, or speak to any member of the Parish Council or Gilcrux Village Hall Committee who will point you in the right direction.
