A Note about Ages and Surnames
Not everyone knew their precise birth year, and in any case the census enumerator might round down an adult’s age to the nearest five years (23 as 20, 37 as 35 etc.) However, children up to the age of fifteen were supposed to be recorded with their exact age. Some surnames are difficult to interpret from handwritten census forms. As the original images are not reproduced here, please keep an open mind about the accuracy of any surname that looks unusual. As always, to be sure, you’ll need to check the civil registration birth certificate, introduced in 1837.
